My theory is that the general public feels better paying for either real goods or digital goods that also happen to be sold in a non-digital format (in a box) — but digital-based goods that aren’t on a store shelf anywhere have an uphill battle. This thinking is unfortunate because it will only hold back new media, but there it is.
I’m one of those people, and it had nothing to do with my unwillingness to download music. I just think a DRM system would be much better, since iTunes only allows certain license agreements with each song. Oh, and if my harddrive crash, tough luck… I get to spend another $500 buying my music? Yes, we need to invest more in digital media, but until I, as the consumer, am not fucked in the ass as soon as something goes wrong, I’d rather buy the damn CD.
Also, it might be wise to develop a 5-10 day app trial, so that people know what they’re getting into. Some of the app descriptions I’ve read have been horrible or even non-existent. No, I’m not going to pay $.99 to throw a damn cow around on the screen, but I’m also not going to pay for your service, if I don’t know what it is. And a good number of the offerings are just variations on each other with competitive pricing. I don’t need 4 tip calculator options.
